August Adoration: An Open Heart

When the soldier pierced Jesus' side, blood and water flowed from his heart. What seemed to be a moment of humiliation and failure of His mission, was the moment of truth, in which God reveals himself as God-Love: in Jesus, God loved us as his children, including his executioners. Along with the blood flowed the living, liberating, life-giving waters, symbol of the promised Spirit. In his dead body and pierced heart, Jesus made known to us the presence of God as love that gives us a totally new life. The image of the open heart provides us with a new center for contemplation. It is the efficient sign for a world wounded and yet loved by God.

- My God, come to my aid.

- Lord, make haste to help me.

- Glory to the Father...

- As it was in the beginning... Alleluia

HYMN

Gracious Heart of the Redeemer,

living fountain of love and grace,

may all hearts praise you and

all peoples acclaim you as their King and Lord.

May my mouth, my hands, my senses,

my strength, my living faith and my sincere love

celebrate your divine Heart.

Admirable Heart of the Redeemer,

who joins earth with heaven,

direct our hearts and

kindle in them the fire of your love.

Silence for Adoration

Psalm 9 adapted

The psalmist praises and thanks God for his justice, defending the oppressed who trust in him and ask for help.

I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart;

I will declare all your wondrous deeds.

I will delight and rejoice in you;

I will sing hymns to your name, Most High.

When my enemies turn back,

they stumble and perish before your face.

From the throne of your cross

You defend the cause and right of the poor.

In your heart opened by a lance

You offer a stronghold for the oppressed,

a refuge in times of distress.

Those who know your name trust in you;

you never forsake those who seek you, Lord.

Sing hymns to the Lord enthroned on Zion;

proclaim his deeds among the nations!

For the avenger of bloodshed remembers,

does not forget the cry of the afflicted.

Silence for Meditation

Recall a difficult moment in your life when you felt God's action intensely and then slowly reread the words of the Psalm.

Reading from the Word: Jn 19, 31-34

Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down.

So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.

Silence for reflection

In your relationships with God, with others or your work are you mainly moved by reason, interest, impulse or love?
